Italian28cleft_per1in Italian matrix wh-questions, nothing can intervene between the wh-phrase and the verbal complex - so a subject that would otherwise normally appear in that position has to be dropped altogether, left- or right-dislocated, or left in a low position (probably inside the vP)
Italian28cleft1could also be preverbal; with Maria and tomorrow being either left-dislocated or right-dislocated, various alternative orders become possible. Notice that the relevant kind of left-dislocation always lands further to the left than wh-movement

(28) Placement of interrogatives in content questions

Alternatives to be checked: movement of the interrogative phrase to the left periphery / movement to the left, but not necessarily to the periphery / interrogative phrase remains in situ / interrogative phrase in preverbal position / displacement to the right (often connected with a cleft-like structure)

c) Asking for a direct object

What did Mary paint yesterday?

Background: This addresses movement (and scrambling) of interrogative phrases, which is more common in V-O languages than in O-V languages (except for perhaps South America and Australia).
